Queen Elizabeth Hospital
The new Acute Hospital in Birmingham houses 1213 patient bedrooms, 30 operating theatres, 23 inpatient theatres, 7 day-case theatres, an accident and emergency department, critical care department, specialist burns unit, decontamination unit, transplant wards, main entrance and outpatients concourse with retail outlets.
A specialist Italian unitised curtain walling system was adopted for the main facade on the uniquely shaped tower structures.
One of the main building control considerations was caused by the sheer size of the development creating many fire engineering challenges and resulting in a unique integrated fire detection and smoke damper solution for the complex.
